underapreciated moment in Venom:

at the end of the bike chase, Eddie says “oh that was pretty cool actually, not gonna lie” and then is hit by the bad guy’s car right after

which is 100x funnier the second time watching because you realize that was the first time someone called Venom symbiote, a known loser, cool

and hearing that caused them to fuck up immediately

UHM please write meta on that Venom “Mask! Copy” scene you said you could write meta on

guardiandae:

writterings:

okay so i’ve had this ask in my inbox for like a week but i just saw the movie again SO let’s write a short lil meta on the mask/copy scene

OKAY so, first things first, the scene right before it is more or less eddie and the symbiote getting to know each other. before that, they had been out on that buoy thing together and the sym does that whole “YOU ARE MINE LOL” speech

and then the next scene of them is walking into the place where eddie used to work. i don’t remember the dialogue verbatim but more or less their conversation went like this:

“So, you’re gonna take over the whole planet, huh?”

“Yeah.”

“Cool, cool. Whatever. But since you’ve peeked around in my mind, you know why we’re here, right? And you’re cool with it?”

“Sure, I’m not unreasonable.”

and then they go into the building to try to drop off the phone that has all the pics that prove eddie was right about drake. this was the first scene where eddie and the symbiote actually talk to each other. There’s no one-word sentence demands or monologues about how the symbiotes/klyntar are going to take over the world. it’s just a regular ol’ conversation, and it reveals how the symbiote is not an asshole – it sees how important this is to eddie, and doesn’t mind that he’s doing it.

in fact, when eddie’s guard friend doesn’t let them in, the symbiote even says, “You want up? Why didn’t you just ask?” (or something like that) and proceeds to just HAUL eddie up the side of the building. and then they have their “I’M FLYING JACK” moment on top of the building, where the sym looks at all the city’s lights and is like “wrow this is so beautiful” while eddie internally screams because he’s afraid of heights.

and then they break into the office. not too much to say, since that scene is more important to eddie’s personal plotline than it is to the eddie/sym relationship.

and THEN we get to the infamous “p*ssy” scene.

(i can’t find a gif for it)

okay, not to derail, but i feel as though this was a “guy humor” type scene. guys typically make fun of their friends and insult them as a way to show affection ESPECIALLY when one of them is visibly uncomfortable. i guess it’s the lighten the mood but it’s also because we repress our emotions and instead of asking if our friends are okay, we make fun of them to let them know we care. (i.e. “i see you have emotions but i’ll make fun of them to acknowledge them unless you really do need help then i’m here for you BRO, love u.”) (ladies and people of other genders do this too, but typically guys will do it relentlessly no matter the situation because men are assholes. and, as a guy, i typically don’t do this with my lady/nb friends either.)

okay, back to the scene – the sym calls eddie a p*ssy and the audience laughs because eddie is being seen as a coward. he has all these powers and he knows he  won’t die if he jumps off a gigantic building, and he still take the elevator? fucking wuss. we all take the sym’s side in that situation.

HOWEVER, it also shows how they’ve progressed to be friends in such a short time. while the symbiote is genderless, they did give it many stereotypical male characteristics in this movie (and called it “he”). the symbiote was using “guy humor” in that scene to bond with eddie. with insulting him, it was also confirming that they were becoming friends.

AND NOW we get to the “Mask! Copy!” scene.

eddie sees all the goons with guns, and walks out with his hands up. the sym, however, doesn’t try to put his arms down like before. eddie also isn’t freaking out. the sym can sense that eddie’s not afraid, so it trusts him to either talk their way out of there,and/ or it trusts him to trust it. and eddie obviously trusts that the sym has his back. eddie engages verbally with the guards and warns them because he’s a good guy, but the whole time he also has an almost cocky look on his face. he knows that they’re no threat to him and his symbiote.

and then the guards call, “Mask! Copy!” to each other, and you can almost see the gears turning in eddie’s head. he can see they’re about to shoot, but he’s not afraid. and ever the smug asshole that he is, he defaults to his sarcastic nature and mocks them because they aren’t a threat.

and thus, he calls out, “Mask!”

and immediately, his symbiote responds with “Copy!” and covers its human. it knew eddie was trusting it to protect them, and even played along with his shitty sense of humor.

this was the first time in the movie where they actually trusted each other and worked together, no matter how stupid it seemed. the pacing of the movie was frankly awful, but in that scene showed how well the director/writers could’ve developed these characters and showed how much potential there was for their relationship in the film and beyond. this scene was the first time they actually acted as a team, and showed what they were like when they were venom. basically, this scene was the first scene where they were venom together.

“We are Venom.”

yeah, they sure are

OP I love this but you skipped a couple things:

When Eddie insists to Venom NOT to eat his friend the guard, he says “we” are leaving and Venom immediately repeats “we” in surprise.

When they get buzzed by a plane and fall off the building, Eddie is terrified, but his immediate reaction is to scream “Where did you go, where did you go?!” because he already knows that Venom can keep him safe, and Venom recovers enough to grab a claw onto the building and says, “I got us.” Wow.

In the office, Eddie complains he almost died and Venom insists thats not true because if Eddie dies, Venom dies. Eddie then says something like, yeah but you could just toss my carcass out and get a new one, and Venom says that Eddie is too good a match to just throw away. “Besides, I am beginning to like you.”

Like wow, Venom fell in love so fast and just because Eddie considers them a partnership and also these two dorks absolutely share the same shitty sense of humor and its beautiful.
